PRECEPTS = Rules about really important things!

“Like a motto?” someone called out. “Like a motto!” said Mr. Browne, nodding as he continued writing on the board. “Like a famous quote. Like a line from a fortune cookie. Any saying or ground rule that can motivate you. Basically, a precept is anything that helps guide us when making decisions about really important things.”

- Auggie, Choose Kind, p46

Our second activity for the Wonder Family Book Club is to make a Precept Pennant.

As Mr. Browne explains in Auggie’s very first English class at Beecher Prep, a precept is anything that helps guide us when making decisions about really important things, or as the Oxford dictionary describes it:

a general rule intended to regulate behaviour or thought.

During the year at Beecher prep, Mr Browne shares a precept each month with Auggie’s class. He also asks the class to send him a precept of their own over the summer.

We love thinking about precepts, because it helps us think about what our values are and what we view as important.

So let's make a pennant with a precept that means a lot to you, which can be hung and viewed and thought about!

Making your Precept Pennant

  1. Select the precept you want on your pennant by having a look at Mr Browne’s precepts (p311), or thinking about the precept you would send to Mr Browne over the summer.

  2. Decide what sort of pennant you would like to create and collect your supplies. We’re going to make one from felt, and one out of card.

  3. Design your pennant. You can use one of the templates we’ve provided for the basic shape of your pennant, and then have some fun designing it. Make sure the precept is the star – you want it to stand out when you look at your finished pennant.

  4. Start creating! This is going to be fun!! Follow your inspiration and make your precept pennant.

  5. Hang your precept pennant somewhere you will see it every day. If everyone in the family makes one – you could consider making a garland from them!

Some of the Supplies you might need:

  • a copy of our pennant templates (links to the resources page)

  • felt, bakers twine, scissors, hot glue gun, hole punch, card, coloured paper, washi tape, felt tips, paints, colouring pencils, stickers and other embellishments

MR BROWNE’S SEPTEMBER PRECEPT:

WHEN GIVEN THE CHOICE BETWEEN BEING RIGHT OR BEING KIND, CHOOSE KIND.
